Brought up by a father who served in the military and is considered a hero by many, Capt. Miguel is not only "an officer and a gentleman" he is also principled and God-fearing. Miguel's younger brother and his mother are killed in a skirmish when it is discovered that Jimbo has witnessed the theft of arms and ammunition by officers of the military.
